Why choose Legal at KPMG as a grad?

Work as part of cross-functional teams to deliver legally and commercially-sound advice to help clients solve a problem. Your project might need to know relevant local laws and regulations for a business transformation or an opinion on the international legal implications of a new technology, or any other legal question or challenge that might arise. The breadth of work and possibilities to learn from experts in other fields make KPMG a brilliant choice for the open-minded graduate who is interested in the end-to-end of solving a problem.

Location of this job: nominate your KPMG office location during the application process.

What your day as a KPMG graduate could look like

You’ll be part of a team of both experienced and early-career professionals who work on solving problems. The client (they could be an international company, a local charity, a small business) brings us a challenge and we create a team and a plan to help solve it.

The work itself is varied depending on your team and the client, so expect to build knowledge of several industries and businesses. A legal background and approach can be applied to a range of areas and many teams across our firm are looking for students with a legal background. You might be researching and gathering information for a client’s expansion into new territory, liaising with clients to understand decisions or challenges they face, navigating and resolving a high stakes tax dispute, or working with your team to understand risks to a client’s business and develop plans to mitigate them.

About the graduate program

For students in their final year of study in 2025 or recently graduated and not yet in professional work

A one year grow pathway with targeted coaching, support and development as you grow your new career

Real work from the start so you can make an impact and learn straightaway

Start work in February 2026 (typically, some teams have a slightly different schedule) with a full time and ongoing graduate role.

What grads say

My managers have had clear conversations with me about what the expectations are to be able to progress, like cementing a certain skill and that guidance has led me to where I am today. (Michaela, 2015 vacationer now Manager)

Whether it’s a client or other people around the office, I enjoy getting to know other people from all walks of life. Pros and cons of working at KPMG Australia

Pros

  • Lots of other grads so plenty of social opportunities with people your age.

  • The flexibility of work-from-home vs in-office is terrific.

  • The team I have joined have been very welcoming, and the expectations are very reasonable.

  • Good on-the-job learning and exposure to a variety of clients.

  • The experience provided and the reputation of the firm's talent in the external market.

Cons

    • There is an underlying trend of long work days from all levels of the firm.

    • You are dependent on the market swings; you can go a few weeks or months without meaningful work or be extremely busy.

    • Promotion appears to be locked in to tenure, i.e. one year, two years, not based on performance or knowledge.

    • Virtual Graduate Program learning is unengaging.

    • You are dependent on the market swings; you can go a few weeks or months without meaningful work or be extremely busy.
